The KO Cup team handicap tournament for the Wheatley Memorial Cup was started by Laurence Wheatley in 2003. The cup was presented to Worcestershire Chess Association for a knockout team handicap tournament. This tournament is intended to give the underdogs chances to win and to be fun. Games are not graded so that a strong players who face much weaker opponents have nothing fear except red faces if they lose. The tournament uses a handicap system based on the ECF grading system and the rules are designed to make drawn matches very unlikely, avoiding the need for replays. To encourage participation, the competition is not limited to clubs playing in the Worcestershire Legaue. Games in this tournament are not sent for grading and do not require ECF membership or ECF membership. Strong players who face much weaker opponents have nothing fear except a red face if they lose.
In last season's competion, the 2017-8 winners were Shirley & Wythall who beat Redditch in a close match. Historical results can be viewed using the KO archive page.
Current confirmed entries are: Greenlands, Malvern, Mercia, Redditch, Shirley & Wythall, Worcester and we expect Droitwich and Kidderminster to join the fun. As soon as all entries have been received and rules for 2018-9 confirmed and players registered, Laurence and Ray will make the draw for the quarter-final round.
Competition rules and advice to captains
The handicap system has been designed so that teams with players whose results are better than predicted win. Captains please familiarise themselves with the criteria of eligible players before starting to selelct a team and the handicap rules before starting a match. The rules make it very difficult for a match to end in a draw after application of any handicap and replays are very unlikely. Click top menu "KO officials & rules" for the full rules. We advise captains to have access to a copy at the start of each match.
