On board 5, Ray Collett forced the gain of a pawn in a blocked position, but Maureen Clark has chances of drawing with bishops of opposite colours on the board. Board 5 was played to a conclusion on 16 December when Collett won after a further 8 moves, yet there were opportunities to have gone wrong. Match reported by Ray Collett. The board 3 game finished first. Players had entered an early queenless middle game and both players concluded they could not make progress after rooks ere exchanged to settle for a three-fold repetition. Shortly afterwards board 4 players in a much simplified position agreed a draw. At this stage after nearly two hours play, Worcester were the exchange down on board 5 and players on board 2 had a closed game with all pieces on the board. Board 2 was greed drawn without playing the second session. Peter Kitson took Worcester into the lead, but this was counterbalaced by Matthew Jordan's win in the endgame on board 6. John Knee faced a fight to the bitter end and eventually overcame resistance from his young opponent. |

Match reported by Jim Friar; commentary by Ray Colett. The first result was a spectacular early win by Andrew Moore on board 4 with a neat sacrifice. Only an hour later was Phil Sith able to equalise for Worcester when his heavy pieces broke through on the king-side. Worcester's new boy Alaric Stephen played a good game to beat his experienced opponent to take Worcester into the lead, but on the other boards, things were looking grim for Worcester. On board 1, Peter Kitson drew a rook and pawn ending a pawn down. Board 2 fiished last when James Friar used his extra pawn to force the win. Jim Friar senior used a neat tactic in a superior position to win two minor pieces for a rook in the early middle game and then mopped up his opponent's pawns and win. |

Result | 2½ - 3½ | Played 13 Feb
Match reported by Jim Friar and Ray Collett. Although Rob Sutton was the last to arrive, the Worcester captain won his game first after an early win of a piece. Worcester went two pints up witn a win from new player John Hesketh on board 6. This was followed by two draws on boards 1 and 2. Joseph Friar won the exchange and Roberts eventually conceded near the end of the playing session. The remaining game between Sharratt and Collett was adjourned. Paul Sharratt played the Four Pawns Attack against Collett's King's Indian Defence and white's command of space soon told and Collett lost a piece. White failed to capitalise on his material advantage and Collett built a fortress that kept white at bay. In the second session of play on 20 February, Sharratt sacrificed his bishop, but not at the most auspicious time and allowed Collett to equalise material. Beginning to run short of time, Sharratt offered a draw in a king and pawn ending. Later analysis suggests that white may have won, but only after a difficult ending with queens and pawns. |

Match reported by John Wrench. On top board, Evans sacrificed a piece early in the game which Spowart felt was too risky to accept. But Spowart's king side was weakened amd Evans eventually broke through. Kidderminster A's new player, Joe Watson has impressed with the few friendly games with wins over some of the club's strongest players. He won his debut league game after a neat Bishop sacrifice and a strong attack against Thomas's king. Playing with the white pieces against a Sicilian, John Wrench broke through in the centre when his opponents King was still in the middle and won a piece. Maurice Bissell had a tough battle against Mike Kitchen on board 3 but emerged with a better endgame. Mark Riley and Terry Pountney's game reached an equal rook and Pawn and agreed a draw. |

Match reported by John Wrench. Well done to Halesowen B who were out-graded on every board. Although Kidd A were missing 3 players, they were favourites to win the encounter, but last years division 2 champions had other ideas! The crucial win came on board 5 and with Tim Yates two pawns down and under pressure, Tony Taylor won the game and with it the match for Halesowen II. |

Match reported by John Southcote and John Wrench. Craig Evans nearly pulled out because he was feeling unwell. He should have felt better at the end of the evneing: he won his game in 8 moves and his team won a crucial league match against current runners-up in the table. John Wrench was in enterprise mode and followed Morphy giving up a rook for a lead in development. John states the variation is not sound, but very difficult to meet over-the-board without study. Joe Watson continued in winning form maintaining his 100% record for Kidderminster. John Davis salvaged honour for the home team by winning a rook and pawn ending. |

Match reported by Ray Collett. Terry Radford scored first for Droitwich. After gaining pawns he exchanged pieces and forced a won bishop and pawn ending. Arnold Kirkland had a strong attack and ended with two bishops making it impossible for the defending rook to stop a pawn promotion. On top board, Mike Hadley had an advantage after the opening because Collett's king could not get to safety. Fortunately for Droitwich, Hadley did not exploit black's exposed king with a knight sacrifice, instead exchanging rooks to enter a queen ending where he could gain two pawns. Hadley chose to take one only and then retreated his queen to defend his king against checks, but it was to no avail because Collett's queen found another spot to threated checks and regain material. Computer analysis confirmed Hadley's offer of a draw was a correct decision. John Llewelyn had a promising attack and Cleak's forces were crowded around his king. There was no obvious way through and John, significantly down on time accepted David's offer of a draw to conclude the match. |

Shirley & Wythall won | 3 - 2¾ | Played 21 Apr
Match reported by Ray Collett. As is usual in this competition, the final was played at Greenlands Social Club. Shirley had a slightly higher graded team and conceded ¾ point on handicap meaning that Worcester had the advantage of the draw and Shirley would need to win 3-2 over-the-board. Board 5 finished first with a draw, but then the Worcester team suffered a loss when their board 4 player realised too late after he had picked up his piece that he was playing a losing move. At this stage, Worcester looked better on the top two boards and worse on board 3. The Collett-Jimenez game featured slow manoevres behind blocked central pawns, but Collett broke through on the a-file and gained a pawn just as his opponent looked as if he would break through with a king-side attack. Collett had a deficit of 30 minutes on the clock and could see no way to defend his extra pawn and offered a draw, which was accepted. Roberts won to equalised the teams' scores, but by then Gilbert was a piece ahead and made sure of his win. Laurence Wheatley complimented both teams on the quality of the games and presented the winners and runners-up with their trophies. |

*The match was played in somewhat irregular circumstances, neither team formally meeting the requirements of the competition rules. Kidderminster fielded a team above the maximum permitted number of grading points - which is 750 - and Greenlands playing an ungraded player not registered for play. The controllers ruled that Kidderminster could ask the match be played strictly according to the rules. Greenlands, however, stated they had been comprehensively beaten in a sporting arrangement agreed by both teams and did not wish Kidderminster to have to play again. |

* Although officially Worcester's home match, the teams agreed to play at Malvern. Match report by Ray Collett. Worcester were under-dogs, well-outgraded on four of the boards. On board 5 Worcester's Colin Vernon made good progress in the middlegame and gained material, and after an hour's play the rest of the games looked reasonably even. Board 2 was first to finish a few minutes before 10pm. Shortly after, Matthew Jordan, overcame John Hesketh, in an ending after a game that was mostly balanced throughout. Roger Yates and Tony Shaw then agreed a draw leaving the match outcome uncertain and depending top and bottom boards. Worcester was ahead on board 5 and Malvern ahead on board 1. With only a few minutes of the playing session left Vernon won for Worcester and the match on handicap. Ray Collett was fighting a reargaurd action in a double rook and pawn ending three pawns down, but Leigh Canham ran short of time and overlooked a stalemate motif allowing his opponent to salvage an undeserved draw. |

Match reported by Giles Stanton. Redditch, last year's winners are out! Except board 3, all the openings were queenside and Arnold Kirkland won with a King's Indian Defence. David Smith made an uncharacteristic blunder giving Bill Watson a piece. Giles Stanto had a promising game with control of an open d-file and central knight. Terry Radford defended well by liquidating the knight making it impossible for Giles Stanton to convert. Kevin Day won a piece early with a queen forking check. David Cleak had a long game winning in a king and pawn ending. |

Shirley & Wythall won on toss of a coin | 2½ - 2½ | Played 4 Feb
Match reported by John Wrench. A very close result from two evenly matched teams that had to be decided by toss of a coin. In the last nail-biting game to finish there was a bishop aganist knight and rook pawn. The poosition was drawn with best play, but the bishop was not put on the correct diagonal in time to stop the knight blocking the possibility of a piece sacrifice for the pawn. An edged win by Shirley & Wythall! |

Worcester won | ½ - 4½ | Played 23 Feb
Match reported by Ray Collett. On paper both teams were of similar strength, but the result was very much different. Worcester's junior player, Max Deering, scored an early win when he forced his knights into the opponent's position. Shortly after Worcester went another point up with a quick win on board 3. Vernon won the exchange with a discovered check and followed it up forking king and queen with his knight. David Cleak and Roger Yates had a long struggle and Cleak forced a minor piece ending where he had an outside passed pawn, but simplification to an ending with bishops on opposite coloured squares secured a draw for Yates. There were also long games on boards 1 and 2. At one stage David L Roberts looked to be in trouble, Arnold Kirkland having manoevured a knight onto d3, but ofter exchanges of all the pieces, Roberts was left with a won king and pawn ending. On board 2, a closed Sicilian Defence led to a blocked position, but Alaric Stephen had more space and patiently played to dominate the only open file eventually winning a pawn, but his opponent blundered as the time control loomed. |
