Match reported by Ray Collett. Board 5 finished first and after the time control Kidderminster were two points ahead. Kidderminster soon recorded another two victories and on Board 1 Jim Friar denied a win for Harris in tenacious defence of a rook and pawn ending a pawn down. By this stage, what had been a promising attack for Wrench had been neutralised by Collett who then took advantage of a blunder allowing exchanges into a clearly won bishop and pawn ending. Collett sealed the last move of the session, but Wrench resigned without resuming play. |

Match reported by Ray Collett and John Edge. The top board adjourned in a position that appeared to defy calculation at the board. Mellor, the exchange down had a protected passed pawn on the 6th rank. There blocked chains of pawns in the centre of the board and both players were attacking exposed kings from the side. Although Mellor had a powerful discovered check available for the sealed move, it was not clear whether Fishburne could not force a purpetual. After reflection both players decided that a purpetual check finish was inevitable with both kings exposed to attack from major pieces. |

Match reported by Ray Collett. In spite of the overall score-line, this was an evenly contested match. After nearly 90 minutes' play only Redditch's board 3 had a winning advantage. Stephen also had a clear advantage but this was balanced Reed's advantage for Redditch on board 5. After a further half hour, Sutton found his minor piece trapped, but was able to gain pawns in exchange. On board 3, the position got more complicated and after the fireworks David Smith gained a rook. Yates was gifted an attack which netted at least a piece on board 5. The first two games to finish were the wins for Yates and Vernon got a sudden mate. Stephen steadily increased his advantage both in position and on the clock until his opponent lost on time. David Smith forced home his advantage skewering his opponent's queen leaving a complex knight and six pawns against knight, bishop and two pawns ending on board 1. In the end the pawns crashed through, but the result was indoubt until nearly the end. |
