Worcestershire are national Minor Counties Champions!

22 Aug. Worcestershire beat Somerset 6½-5½ in the 2020 final for the Minor Counties Online championship. This match was tougher for Worcestershire than the previous encounter in the group stage. On board 1 Kevin Hurney again faced IM Jack Rudd playing at lightning speed. This time Kevin secured a draw. Somerset scored heavily on the top boards, but the Worcestershire lower boards were again the engine for success. Worcestershire players with wins were: Julie Wilson and Hossam Aboushady (both Stourbridge), Tony Shaw and Matthew Holmes (both Worcester). See full results.

8 Aug. Worcestershire beat Berkshire in National semi-final. In the Minor Counties Open competitionworcestershire won 7-5 in a match of two halves. Berkshire dominated in the upper boards and Worcestershire won all the games on boards 8 to 12. Worcestershire winners included four players from Worcester City: Ray Collett, Robin Hayles, Tony Shaw, and Matthew Holmes with Hossam Aboushady (Stourbridge) and Ian Ellis (Greenlands) being the others to score for the county. See full results.

The match was played over 14 boards and Cumbria gained victory by a single point. KO match played 2 Jan at Worcester

Reported by Arnold Peace and Simon Berry. Witha team led by the county champion, Shirley’s win over-the-boards was more or less assured beacuse they outgraded Worcester; but, they had to win 4-1 or better. Board 5 saw an early finish while other games had only just enetered the middlegame. The next game to complete wa board 3 where Jimenez mated his opponent with rooks on the back ranks. Shortly after, Arnold Peace obtained a big advantage of the exchange and an advanced passed pawn and converted. Worcester’s team captain, Simon Berry put up stiff resistance but was unable to withstand queen-side pressure and succumbed to Asbury’s knight fork. Philip Austin was the last to surrender putting up stiff resistance after Fallowfield won a pawn and players simplified to a king and pawn ending.

4 Jan. Quarter-final Greenlands - Kidderminster fixture not played. Greenlands conceded.

KO match played 14 Jan at Alvechurch Social Club

Reported by Ray Collett. With an unavoidable default, the handicap was based on the four boards played and adjusted to 80% of its value so that Redditch had to score 2½ points over the boards played. Board 3 finished first when Kirkland won a piece, but Zbircea restored Redditch’s fortunes by squeezing his opponent’s position to win material. At thi stage, Evans had won a pawn, but Collett had good drawing possibilities and board 4 looked even. Board 1 simplified to a double rook and pawn ending with Collett having an outside passed pawn, but blundered by failing to counter Evans’s mating net. Byrne played on in an equal ending and finally netted his point.
